Counting method

The result shows elapsed calendar days between the two dates.

How to calculate days between two dates

Enter a start date and an end date. The calculator compares the two calendar dates and returns the total number of elapsed days between them. It also converts that total into complete weeks plus remaining days and shows the calendar span in years, months and days.

The order of the dates does not prevent a calculation. If the end date is earlier than the start date, the calculator reports that the dates are reversed and shows the absolute difference between them. You can also use the Swap dates button to reverse them instantly.

Elapsed days vs. inclusive days

By default, this calculator uses elapsed-day counting. For example, January 1 to January 2 is one elapsed day because one full calendar-day interval separates the two dates. January 1 to January 1 is therefore zero elapsed days.

Turn on Include the end date when your situation requires inclusive counting. With that option enabled, January 1 through January 2 counts as two calendar dates, and a single date counts as one day.

Calendar days are not business days

Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays are treated like any other calendar date. Calculations that exclude non-working days need a dedicated business-day method.

Understanding the result

The main result is the total number of calendar days between the dates. The weeks-and-days result expresses the same count in groups of seven. For example, 17 days can also be written as 2 weeks and 3 days.

The elapsed calendar span is different. It describes how the two dates relate using calendar years, months and remaining days. Months are not treated as a fixed number of days because calendar months can contain 28, 29, 30 or 31 days.

Date difference example

From January 1, 2026 to February 1, 2026 there are 31 elapsed calendar days. That is 4 weeks and 3 days. The calendar span is exactly 1 month. If inclusive counting is enabled, the day count becomes 32 because the end date is included as an additional counted date.

Leap years and calendar changes

Leap years are handled automatically because the calculator works with actual calendar dates. A period that crosses February 29 therefore includes that additional date when the selected year contains one.

Calculations are based on calendar dates rather than local clock times. This avoids daylight-saving or timezone changes accidentally turning a calendar-day interval into a 23-hour or 25-hour timestamp difference.

Frequently asked questions

Does the calculator count the start date?

Standard elapsed counting does not count the starting date as an additional day. It measures the calendar-day intervals between the two dates.

Can I include both dates?

Yes. Enable the inclusive option to include the end date in the total count. This effectively counts both endpoints of the selected period.

What happens if the end date is earlier?

The calculator still works. It shows the absolute difference and tells you that the end date occurs before the start date.

Are weekends included?

Yes. Every calendar day is included. No weekends or public holidays are removed.

Is one month always 30 days?

No. Calendar months have different lengths, so the calculator keeps total days and calendar years-months-days as separate ways of describing the interval.

Using this calculator effectively

The Days Between Dates Calculator measures the calendar-day interval between two dates. It reports total days, weeks plus remaining days and the elapsed calendar span while keeping inclusive counting optional.

Common uses

  • Checking how many calendar days separate two events or deadlines.
  • Converting a date interval into complete weeks and remaining days.
  • Comparing dates that cross different months, years or leap days.

Tips for a better estimate

  • Decide whether you need elapsed-day counting or inclusive counting before using the result.
  • Use a business-day calculation instead when weekends or holidays must be excluded.
  • Check both entered dates carefully because changing either endpoint changes the interval.
