How Much Should You Tip? Tip Percentage Guide

A tip calculation starts with the bill amount and the percentage you want to leave. From there, you can calculate the tip itself, the final total and each person's share when splitting a bill.

How to calculate a tip

Tip = Bill amount × (Tip percentage ÷ 100)

For example, a 20 percent tip on a 50-dollar bill is 10 dollars.

50 × 0.20 = 10

Calculate the total bill

Total = Bill amount + Tip

Split the bill

After adding the tip, divide the final total by the number of people sharing the bill.

Per-person total = Final total ÷ Number of people

Should the tip be calculated before or after tax?

Practices vary by location and personal preference. Some people calculate gratuity from the pre-tax subtotal, while others use the final billed amount.

Tip percentages are not universal

Tipping customs vary substantially by country, service type and local practice. A calculator performs the arithmetic but does not determine what gratuity is expected in a particular situation.

Choose the percentage yourself

Use a tip percentage appropriate to the location, service and your own judgment. CalculatorSquare does not prescribe a particular gratuity rate.
