CBM Explained: How to Calculate Cubic Meters for Shipping

CBM stands for cubic meter and is a standard way to express shipment volume. It is commonly used when comparing cargo volume, planning freight space and communicating shipment dimensions.

What does CBM mean?

CBM means cubic meter. One cubic meter represents a volume measuring one meter long, one meter wide and one meter high.

CBM = Length(m) × Width(m) × Height(m)

Calculate CBM from centimeters

If package dimensions are measured in centimeters, multiply length, width and height, then divide by 1,000,000 to convert cubic centimeters to cubic meters.

CBM = Length(cm) × Width(cm) × Height(cm) ÷ 1,000,000

Worked example

A carton measuring 60 cm × 40 cm × 50 cm has a volume of 120,000 cubic centimeters. Dividing by 1,000,000 gives 0.12 cubic meters.

60 × 40 × 50 ÷ 1,000,000 = 0.12 CBM

Calculate CBM for multiple cartons

If all cartons have identical dimensions, calculate the CBM of one carton and multiply it by the number of cartons.

Total CBM = CBM per carton × Number of cartons

Shipments with different carton sizes

When cartons have different dimensions, calculate the volume of each size group separately and add the results together.

Why CBM matters in freight

  • It provides a consistent way to describe cargo volume.
  • It helps compare the space required by different shipments.
  • It is useful for container and warehouse planning.
  • It can be one input used in freight pricing calculations.
Volume is not weight

CBM measures physical volume. It does not tell you the actual weight of the shipment or automatically determine the freight charge.
