What are decimal hours?

Decimal hours express time as a base-10 number instead of separate hours and minutes. One hour contains 60 minutes, so the minute portion must be divided by 60 before it can be added to the whole-hour value.

Decimal hours = Hours + Minutes ÷ 60

For example, 8 hours 30 minutes is 8.50 decimal hours because 30 ÷ 60 equals 0.50. Likewise, 8 hours 15 minutes equals 8.25 hours and 8 hours 45 minutes equals 8.75 hours.

How to convert hours and minutes to decimal hours

Enter the whole number of hours and a minute value from 0 through 59. The calculator converts the minutes into a fraction of an hour and adds that amount to the entered hours.

You can display the result to two, three or four decimal places. The calculator also shows the unrounded conversion so you can distinguish the exact calculation from the rounded display value.

How to convert decimal hours to hours and minutes

To convert the other direction, multiply the decimal-hour value by 60 to find the total number of minutes. The calculator then divides those minutes into complete hours and the remaining minutes.

For example, 7.75 decimal hours equals 465 minutes. That converts back to 7 hours and 45 minutes.

Decimal hours are not clock minutes

A decimal value such as 8.30 does not mean 8 hours 30 minutes. Instead, 0.30 of an hour equals 18 minutes because 0.30 × 60 = 18.

Common minutes to decimal hours

Some frequently used conversions are 5 minutes = 0.0833 hours, 10 minutes = 0.1667 hours, 15 minutes = 0.25 hours, 20 minutes = 0.3333 hours, 30 minutes = 0.50 hours and 45 minutes = 0.75 hours.

Decimal hours for payroll and timesheets

Decimal hours are commonly useful when work time needs to be entered into payroll, invoicing or timesheet systems that expect a decimal quantity instead of an hours-and-minutes format.

This calculator performs the time conversion only. Workplace rules can use specific rounding increments, break policies or overtime rules, so those policies should be applied separately when preparing an official payroll record.

Decimal Hours Calculator vs. Work Hours Calculator

Use this calculator when you already know the amount of time and only need to convert its format. Use the Work Hours Calculator when you need to calculate the duration between a start time and an end time first.

For several daily clock-in and clock-out entries, the Time Card Calculator totals the weekly work time and also reports decimal hours.
