How to calculate time duration

Time duration is the elapsed amount of time between a starting clock time and an ending clock time. This calculator works to the second, so the result can include complete hours, remaining minutes and remaining seconds.

Enter both times and specify whether the end time occurs on the same day or on the next day. Making the day relationship explicit prevents an earlier-looking end time from being silently interpreted as an overnight period.

Time duration formula

Duration = End time − Start time

When the end time is on the next day, one full 24-hour period is added to the ending clock value before the difference is calculated.

Same-day duration example

From 9:15:30 AM to 5:45:45 PM on the same day, the elapsed duration is 8 hours, 30 minutes and 15 seconds. The same interval can also be expressed as total seconds, total minutes or decimal hours.

Duration across midnight

A period from 11:30 PM to 1:15 AM crosses midnight. Choose the next-day option so the calculator treats the ending time as occurring on the following calendar day. The duration is then 1 hour and 45 minutes.

Time duration is not work time

This calculator measures raw elapsed time. It does not deduct breaks or apply payroll rules. Use the Work Hours Calculator for shift calculations that include unpaid break time.

Add or subtract a time duration

The second calculation mode starts with a clock time and moves forward or backward by a chosen number of hours, minutes and seconds. If the calculation crosses midnight, the result also shows the number of calendar days crossed.

Durations can exceed 24 hours. For example, adding 26 hours to 10:00 AM produces 12:00 PM on the next day. The result also shows the day offset when midnight is crossed.

Total seconds, minutes and decimal hours

A duration can be represented in several equivalent forms. Total seconds are useful for precise time calculations, while total minutes and decimal hours are often easier to compare or use in another calculation.

If you specifically need to convert a known hours-and-minutes value into decimal hours, use the Decimal Hours Calculator.

Time Duration Calculator vs. Work Hours Calculator

The Time Duration Calculator is for general elapsed-time arithmetic and supports seconds. The Work Hours Calculator is designed around work shifts, overnight shifts and unpaid break deductions.

Frequently asked questions

Can the calculator handle seconds?

Yes. Start times, end times and added or subtracted durations can include seconds.

What if the end time is earlier than the start time?

If the period crosses midnight, choose “On the next day.” If both times are intended to be on the same day, an earlier end time is not a valid forward duration.

Can a duration be longer than 24 hours?

Yes in the add/subtract mode. Enter any valid hour total and the calculator reports the resulting clock time plus the calendar-day offset.

Does this calculator subtract work breaks?

No. It calculates raw elapsed time. Use the Work Hours Calculator when break time must be deducted.

Does it show decimal hours?

Yes. The between-times result includes decimal hours, total minutes and total seconds in addition to the H:M:S duration.

Using this calculator effectively

The Time Duration Calculator measures the exact elapsed time between two clock times in hours, minutes and seconds. It can also add or subtract an H:M:S duration from a starting time and report when the result crosses into another day.

Common uses

  • Finding the exact elapsed hours, minutes and seconds between two clock times.
  • Calculating an overnight duration by identifying that the end time occurs on the next day.
  • Adding or subtracting a precise time duration from a starting clock time.

Tips for a better estimate

  • Choose the next-day option when the ending time occurs after midnight.
  • Use the Work Hours Calculator instead when unpaid breaks need to be deducted from a shift.
  • Check minute and second entries carefully because each must be between 0 and 59.
